Scams such as these involve purchases, deliveries or online marketplaces.
On resale sites such as Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji and eBay, there are many fake buyers and sellers.
Buyers will pretend to want to buy an item from you, and will send you a payment, such as a fake Interac e-Transfer® request. This will give them access to your bank account. This technique is known as phishing.
Sellers will offer you an item at a discounted price and then disappear after receiving your electronic payment, without you receiving the item.
What to watch out for:
The buyer or seller offers to make payment before meeting, so that the item can be reserved.
The buyer or seller refuses to meet in a public place.
The buyer or seller wishes to use an unsecured payment method, such as an Interac e-Transfer payment with no security question, prepaid cards or cryptocurrencies.
The price is much lower than the market value.
How to protect yourself:
Opt for face-to-face transactions in a public place, with payment in cash.
Check the buyer's or seller's profile for reviews, when the profile was created, activity, etc.
Never share personal information, like your address or bank details.
